Dialogic Music
A series of improvisations and processed-based sonic works curated and performed by Paul Stapleton with guest artists Jon Aveyard, Mona McCarthy, Caroline Pugh, Dan Reynolds, Henry Tremain, Emily Williams and Nick Williams. Members of this ensemble have idiosyncratic interest including: binaural sound walks, medieval Welsh harp, powerpop/punk, media art, contact improvisation, online audio installations and ring-tone design. The group is linked by their past and present affiliations with the University of Central Lancashire’s performing arts courses and their shared interest in collaborative sonic improvisation. The performance will feature the use of custom made metallic instruments and music software.

Sounds-wise I’ve been looking at my old extended vocal technique stuff again, doing impersonations of mechanical noises(!). Generally have been experimenting with different ways of adding texture to my voice by obstructing the flow of sound with my throat and mouth.

I had a solo attempt on the sound sculpture a few weeks ago and it was very useful for me. It highlighted what a collective instrument it is, not at all designed to be played by one person. However, I think it would be interesting for everyone to have a go on their own because you can better appreciate what sounds are possible without someone else going hell-for-leather on another part of it.

How easily can the instruments on the top of the sound sculpture be changed during the performance? What’s the bore size for the attachments? There isn’t long to go before the event but there may be chance of performers bringing additional objects to try adding to the sculpture.

I think we will definitely be changing attachments to the instruments during the performance… any new attachments would be great. sizes are as follows: aprox 1.5cm (9/16th in) in diameter… length is somewhat flexible with the majority of existing attachments allowing for aprox 8cm (just over 3in) in length for the bit that fits into the slot on each box.
for those of you that have no idea what we are talking about, take a look at the top picture of the instruments to the left of these comments. can you see how the chimes attachment fits into the box? each box has the same size slot for attaching instruments. different attachments are visible in the second image.
